Here we are, Sunfield Home. What started as a farm in the Midlands region of KZN, South Africa, many years ago, is now a flourishing “home from home” haven for adults with intellectual impairments.
Intellectual impairments in loving and caring adults
Join me as I take you through the kaleidoscope of events and experiences made special by our very loving and talented residents.
Portfolios for various levels of functionality
I am a house mother at Sunfield Home Howick, a safe environment for adults with intellectual impairments. In my house there are 42 intellectually impaired adults of varying functioning levels and disabilities. We also have day care for adults with special needs.
Although we do have routines and schedules, no two days are the same. We face challenges on a daily basis. The residents fall under the guidance and overall governance of various staff members as well as management. Each staff member qualified / experienced to handle his or her portfolio.
Active lives lead by intellectually impaired adults
Our residents lead an active life , taking part in sports, swimming , various games and therapeutic programmes etc. There are many functions happening yearly such as the Gala, Sports day, concerts and fairs.
Many also take part in outside events like the Midmar Mile. Some residents have also represented KZN in the elite Summer Games in Polokwane. We also participated in athletics against other homes.
On a lighter note the residents enjoy dressing up for a Valentine’s ball , dancing the afternoon away. Fancy dress is another firm favourite. Watching movies on a big screen, outdoors, whilst having a braai is also another highlight.
Covid takes its toll
Unfortunately we are not able to host our major fundraising events due to the Covid pandemic. Sunfield Home Howick is, however still in need of sponsors for our residents, as many of them are in need of financial support.
Conclusion
Safe care facilities for the special needs of intellectually impaired adults is a very real financial strain. Can you help? Any amount, no matter how large or small, would be gratefully received to assist those adults whose parents are no longer around to support them. Please Donate.
