At Sunfield Howick, caring for people and caring for the planet go hand in hand. Our newest recycling initiative is helping us do both — creating a more sustainable community while giving our Residents meaningful opportunities to contribute and grow.

A Community Recycling Hub

We’ve recently introduced public recycling bins on-site at Sunfield Howick — inviting our neighbours to drop off their clean recyclables, including plastic, cardboard, milk and cooldrink bottles, tin, and paper. By joining forces with the local community, we’re reducing waste that would otherwise end up in landfills and encouraging everyone to play their part in protecting the environment.

Every bottle, can, and piece of paper collected helps us teach our Residents about environmental awareness, responsibility, and teamwork — all while supporting a greener future for Howick.

Partnering with Singakwenza: Education Through Recycling

One of the most inspiring parts of our recycling journey has been our partnership with Singakwenza, a local non-profit organisation that shares our passion for both people and the planet.

Singakwenza — which means “We can do it!” in isiZulu — focuses on early childhood education through sustainable, low-cost resources. They collect clean recyclables such as yoghurt tubs, toilet roll inners, and bread bags to mention a few and transform them into creative, educational toys and learning materials for young children across South Africa.

Through this partnership, the recyclables collected at Sunfield Howick don’t just avoid landfill — they become tools for learning and joy. Each item we pass on to Singakwenza is turned into something meaningful: skipping ropes made from bread bags, counting frames made from bottle tops, or building blocks made from old containers.

This collaboration beautifully aligns with Sunfield’s mission — finding purpose in every person and value in every small act. For our Residents, it’s a chance to see how their daily recycling efforts ripple outwards, helping other communities and children learn, grow, and play.

Together, Sunfield and Singakwenza are proving that sustainability and care can go hand in hand — and that when communities collaborate, small changes can create lasting impact.

Waste Not, Want Not: Handmade Firelighters

Each pack is a small example of what can happen when care, creativity, and sustainability come together. The funds raised from these firelighters go directly back into supporting Sunfield’s programmes and activities — creating a full circle of community benefit.

But the recycling doesn’t stop there! Our creative Residents have found an innovative way to turn something as simple as used teabags and paraffin into handmade firelighters — available for purchase at the Sunfield Shop.

Together for a Cleaner, Kinder Tomorrow

Our recycling initiative isn’t just about waste management — it’s about connection, purpose, and making a positive impact where we live. Every can dropped off, every teabag saved, and every firelighter sold brings us one step closer to a cleaner, kinder Howick.

We invite our community to join us on this journey — to recycle, repurpose, and reimagine what’s possible when we work together.

Visit Sunfield Howick to drop off your recyclables or pop into the Sunfield Shop to pick up a bottle of handmade firelighters.

Together, we can make a difference — one small act at a time.
