Fragile X Syndrome is the most common inherited cause of intellectual disability. It affects how the brain develops, leading to challenges in learning, communication, and behaviour.
The condition is caused by a mutation on the FMR1 gene found on the X chromosome. This gene usually produces a protein (FMRP) that helps brain cells communicate. In people with Fragile X Syndrome, this protein is missing or doesn’t work properly.
While the condition affects both males and females, males are usually more severely impacted, as they have only one X chromosome.
Living with Fragile X Syndrome often means facing many small battles each day. If you’re a parent, caregiver, sibling, or friend, you’ve probably seen some of the following:
1. Communication Challenges
People with FXS often struggle to express themselves. Your child might:
This makes everyday interactions—from asking for help to joining a conversation—stressful and sometimes overwhelming.
2. Learning Difficulties
Children and adults with FXS usually have mild to moderate intellectual impairment. They might:
As a parent, it’s heartbreaking to watch your child try their best and still feel like they’re falling behind.
3. Emotional and Behavioural Struggles
FXS often brings intense emotions and challenging behaviours. You might notice:
Many families say it feels like they’re always on alert—never sure what might trigger the next meltdown.
4. Sensory Sensitivities
Loud noises, bright lights, crowded spaces, certain fabrics—these can all be too much for someone with Fragile X. They might:
These sensitivities can make everyday experiences—from grocery shopping to family gatherings—feel like obstacles instead of joys.
5. Social Difficulties
Many individuals with Fragile X want connection, but have trouble knowing how. They may:
This isolation can be just as painful for parents and caregivers as it is for the individual themselves.
