Each year, on 21 March, the world comes together to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day—a day dedicated to raising awareness, promoting inclusion, and celebrating the lives and contributions of people with Down Syndrome.
The date itself is significant. The 21st day of the 3rd month represents the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome, which causes Down Syndrome.
One of the most recognised ways people show support is by wearing mismatched socks—a simple but powerful symbol of individuality and acceptance.
The 2026 theme, “Together Against Loneliness,” highlights something deeply important: that meaningful connection is essential for every person’s wellbeing. Loneliness can affect anyone—but for individuals with intellectual disabilities, the need for genuine inclusion, friendship, and community is especially important.
For many individuals with intellectual disabilities, loneliness is a very real experience.
Opportunities for meaningful connection are often limited, and true inclusion can be difficult to find.
This is why communities like Sunfield Howick matter.
At Sunfield Howick, this is something that is lived out every day.
Our Residents are part of a community where they are known, valued, and celebrated—not only for who they are, but for the unique gifts they bring into the Sunfield Family.
They form lasting friendships, support one another, and share in daily life together. Through structured routines and shared experiences, a strong sense of belonging is naturally built.
Residents also take part in vocational workshops, where they develop skills, contribute meaningfully, and experience a sense of purpose.
Being part of the community is an important part of life at Sunfield.
Our Residents actively engage with the wider community through initiatives such as:
Partnering with the municipality on a recycling programme
These interactions create opportunities not only for inclusion, but for connection, contribution, and shared understanding.
This year, Sunfield celebrated World Down Syndrome Day alongside Club 21, bringing Residents together in a spirit of unity, joy, and shared experience.
The day was filled with mismatched socks, laughter, and meaningful connection—followed by a fun St Patrick’s Day celebration, where green outfits and funky socks added even more colour to the occasion.
In these moments—whether connecting with others, sharing a laugh, or simply being together—the true meaning of the day comes to life.
At Sunfield Howick, creating connection is not left to chance—it is built into daily life.
Through shared experiences, meaningful work, and a strong sense of community, our Residents are not only included—they belong.
And in that belonging, loneliness has no place
